Performance Support Tools

Often referred to as “Just-in-Time” training, performance support tools give learners access to critical, specific and concise information quickly and efficiently to help them successfully accomplish a task. For example, checklists, step-by-step procedures, diagrams, flowcharts and quick references can be performance support tools. Performance support tools or job aids are often used in combination with interactive training sessions (either web or classroom) to help the transfer of skills from the training environment to on-the-job.

  • Provide instant access to information that is needed
  • Reduce training time requirements (time off-the-job)
  • Increase transfer of skills back on the job when combined with training
  • Improve on-the-job performance for infrequent and/or new activities
  • Reduce on-the-job coaching requirements for new/infrequent activities

Performance Tools are typically selected when:

  • Few resources (time, money, people) are available to support training
  • Tasks are complex or performed infrequently
  • Information, procedures, policies or resources are changing regularly
  • It is critical that the tasks are performed correctly
